Austin City Council is proposing to increase the number of permits to the city’s smaller competing taxi companies including Austin Cab and Lone Star Cab. If approved, 20 additional permits are scheduled to be issued in early October, 2012.
According to the city’s charter (13-2-322), the calculation of necessary taxi permits is calculated by multiplying the previous year’s total permits by the average percent of change in the city population and by the number of taxi departures from Austin-Bergstrom Intl Airport.
Council member Chris Riley voiced his opposition to the issuance of new permits and as reported by KUT News stated “council was blatantly disregarding the Ground Transportation Department’s taxi permit formula.”
