The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors (Board) is considering allowing multiple taxi companies to provide walk-up taxi service from the Sacramento International Airport. Sacramento Independent Taxi Owner Association (SITOA) currently has the exclusive airport taxi contract to provide on-demand taxi service from the SMF Airport. This agreement is scheduled to expire on November 30, 2012.
For the last 20 years, Sacramento Independent Taxi Owner Association has held the airport taxi contract at the SMF Airport. Prior to 1992, the Sacramento Airport operated as an open-system which allowed unlimited access to the competing Sacramento taxi companies.
Based on staff analysis by the Sacramento County Airport System, using multiple contracted operators would require additional employees to manage taxicab operations at the Sacramento Airport. The County Airport System recommended a single operator to provide on-demand taxi service from the Sacramento Intl Airport.
Multiple Contracted Operators: Associated Costs
- Airport officials stated that they would have to hire 5 new employees if the airport taxi contract allowed two competing taxi companies to operate from the Sacramento Airport. Each company would be assigned to a designated terminal (A or B).
- Another proposal to operate on alternative days would require 10 new employees.
- Hiring new employees to manage multiple contracted operators would require use fees ranging from$5.35 to $9.34 per taxi ride from the Sacramento Airport.
- The current taxi-system which uses only one operator requires no use fees.
