The city of Chicago recently sued 15 Chicago taxi companies which were not in compliance with wheelchair-accessible minimum requirements. New rules mandate companies with 20 or more taxicab medallions to actively operate a vehicle fleet of at least 5% wheelchair accessible taxis.
The city is seeking to revoke the taxicab medallion licenses for the vehicles that were required to be wheelchair accessible. An Administrative hearing is scheduled for March, 2012.
Earlier this month, the city passed wheelchair accessibility reforms including the following:
- Chicago taxi companies which operate more than 20 taxis must operate a fleet of at least 5% accessible vehicles.
- Establish a wheelchair-accessibility fund to offer reimbursements for companies which exceed minimum accessibility requirements.
- Reduce the annual taxicab medallion fee from $600 to $500 for wheelchair-accessible cabs.
The city of Chicago offers travelers a centralized dispatch service for wheelchair-accessible taxi service by calling 800-281-4466.
