The Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) which regulates Philadelphia taxi companies recently proposed new regulations which would mandate that 300 taxis be wheelchair-accessible by the end of year 2012. By January 1, 2016, all Philadelphia taxis will be required to be wheelchair-accessible.
Less than 1% of the city’s 1,600 taxis are currently wheelchair-accessible. Both Freedom Taxi and Checker are the only Philadelphia taxi companies offering these vehicles and operate a total of 3 wheelchair-accessible taxicabs.
The 300 medallion taxicabs will be chosen via a lottery process.
