Seattle Seeks Enforcement Authority For Limousine Services

by transreviews on June 6, 2010

The city of Seattle is seeking enforcement authority from the state of Washington in order to prevent illegal limousine operators from operating within the Seattle area.  According to the city, approximately 20% of the Seattle limousine companies are operating illegally.  These limousine companies operate with no license or insurance and pose a significant safety risk to travelers.

The state Department Of Licensing (Washington DOL) is responsible for the regulation of limousine operators within the state of Washington which also includes the city of Seattle.  The state DOL lacks the manpower and financial resources to provide consistent enforcement.  As a result, many limousine companies continue to operate illegally with impunity.

Seattle is lobbying the state through pending legislation of House Bill 1775. HB 1775 would allow the Consumer Affairs division of the city of Seattle the authority to enforce state regulations pertaining to vehicle for hire passenger carriers which includes limousine companies.  The Consumer Affairs division is responsible for enforcement of taxi companies which operate within the city of Seattle.
